‘Interpreting an Image’ Seminar by Estelle Chauvard, Graphiste/ Graphic Designer from Ecole Superier Estiene, Paris, France was a delight to hear.

Estelle said,”when you look at a portrait, can you tell me the points that make you think it’s a portrait?”

There are 4 points :

1. a portrait shows an identifiable human being
2. a portrait involves a pact between the portrait maker and the model. In a portrait, the model always know they are taken in picture.
3. A portrait is always a directed picture – so, a designed picture, the result of two wills (the one of the model and the one of the portrait maker)
4. The main function of the portrait is the memory. The portrait  will stay after the death of the model.

She also had a few tips to give to photographers and designers:

• Less is more : one concept, one action to stage
• All the elements in the picture have to be indispensable
• All the elements is a sign that conveys sense : so, remove the ones that are unclear, because its muddle the sense of the image.

Arena 17 Animation Faculty Ramandeep Kaur said,”The Seminar made us look at images in a deeper way, and we are now able to design an image in the same way you would do a sketch. This allows us to be able to approach the staging in live films as well as animation film with ease. This new initiative by our institute has made our students get a deeper insight into the world of films.”
